The same gill architecture. Ready to retrofit. The Lagoon Inline bolts directly between standard pipe flanges, upstream of any electromagnetic flow meter.

It brings the same fish-gill-inspired lamellae conditioning to existing installations — without replacing the meter, modifying the piping, or requiring any straight-run upstream.

The Nature Behind the Design

A fish breathing in a fast-moving stream faces the same challenge as a flow meter in a busy pump room: the incoming flow is turbulent, swirling, and unpredictable. The gill solves this with lamellae — a multi-scale arrangement of thin plates that present enormous surface area to the incoming flow. Coherent vortices are broken apart. Asymmetric velocity profiles are redistributed. The flow leaving the gill is calm, ordered, and ready for gas exchange — exactly as the flow leaving a Lagoon conditioner is calm, ordered, and ready for accurate measurement.

The Lagoon Inline uses this same three-stage gill architecture:

Stage A — Vane array with whale-tubercle leading edges.
Counter-rotating vanes cancel swirl in a short axial distance. Humpback whale-inspired leading-edge geometry prevents separation at steep vane angles, maximising swirl cancellation without extra pressure drop.

Stage B — Two-scale lamellae lattice.
The structural heart of the conditioner. Primary-scale features break large asymmetric flow structures; secondary-scale features eliminate residual turbulence. Together they achieve 99.6% swirl reduction — the highest in the Lagoon product line.

Stage C — Relaxation zone.
A short downstream zone, lined with micro-riblets inspired by sharkskin, allows the flow to settle fully before entering the meter.

The Inline’s 200 mm total length provides a longer lamellae zone than the Insert, giving additional axial distance for mode destruction. This makes it the best choice for the most demanding upstream environments.

Performance

99.6% swirl reduction — the highest swirl-reduction performance in the Lagoon product line. Under the most severe test condition (S = 0.60 fully imposed swirl at inlet), residual swirl at the meter is reduced to below 0.003. That is approximately 200 times below the measurement error threshold.

The right choice for severe upstream environments. The Inline’s longer lamellae lattice zone is specifically suited to installations with multiple out-of-plane elbows, control valves immediately upstream, pump discharge headers, or any configuration where the upstream piping produces unusually strong or compound disturbances.

Retrofits onto any electromagnetic meter. Because the Lagoon Inline is a standalone spool piece, it works with any make or model of electromagnetic flow meter — not just the ZR-MUNI.

Who It's For

  • Field retrofits of existing electromagnetic meters suffering from measurement error due to upstream disturbances.

Installation

The Lagoon Inline installs between any pair of standard flanges. No tools beyond a standard flange bolt kit are required.

  1. Isolate and depressurise the pipe section.
  2. Position the Inline with the flow direction arrow pointing downstream.
  3. Torque flange bolts to the standard specification for the pressure class.
  4. Restore flow. No commissioning procedure required.

Recommended positioning: mount the Inline immediately upstream of the meter with flange faces touching. No additional straight run between the Inline and the meter is required.
